Puanga Matariki - June 2008 |
|
Members of the Josephite Affiliates group led the quarterly liturgy at Mt St Joseph this month, centering it on the celebration of the Maori New Year – Puanga Matariki.
In the gathering time those present followed the Maori peoples’ Matariki customs of taking time for wananga / learning, time for kohi kai / food abundance, and Miroia e Tane / planting of trees and shrubs.
Ross Skilton of the local observatory gave a brief presentation of the place of the planets and stars at this time, in particular those of Matariki / Pleiades and Puanga / Rigel. There was time for gratitude in displaying the abundance of fruit in the form of preserves. And the planting of a miro tree on the property brought the gathering to a close.
The miro tree is planted by Sr Liz Hickey, Joseph Barber, and Sr Makareta.
