I was born in Hastings, one of a family of six children and of Lebanese descent. I was educated at St Joseph’s School, Hastings, which continued through to Secondary School, later known as Tenison College. My grounding in education was a thorough one, which prepared me well for my profession in teaching.
At 20 years of age I entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph, Wanganui, where I had many opportunities to prepare for my future as a teacher. There also, I continued with music, singing, and some art work, all of which helped with my development not only as a person but gave me a deeper appreciation of these gifts and the ability to use my talents.
My teaching career commenced in Levin as a teacher of junior classes, then to Ohakune, Hastings, Wanganui, Waipawa and Taihape. My promotion to being a principal and the opportunity to teach all other grades began in Manaia, on to Taihape, St Mary’s Hastings, Mairangi Bay as deputy principal, and finally St Joseph’s Levin. Interwoven in these years I attended many refresher courses, courses for principals, and two leadership courses, one in Australia and one in Auckland.
Following my teaching career I was chaplain to our newly established Nazareth Rest Home in Wanganui for three years, furthering my education in this field.
My ministry then focussed on our corporate mission devoted to the support of Women and Family where I worked in Taupo. Finally I moved to Otaki where I now reside, working as a voluntary community worker. I am able to be a support person to the elderly in their homes, and visit rest homes or places where there is a need. I also ventured into helping adults with reading difficulties after completing training in this area.
I see my ministry as one where I need a listening heart, compassion and generosity, with time, support and energy. I love these treasured elderly who possess wisdom, grace and trust, and I am grateful that I can be of service to them and hopefully a joy in their lives.
